Roman, Caracalla * Mature928 views
Of all the Caracalla portraits, I’m most drawn to & fond of those which show him in his greatest maturity. This one, dated to 217 AD, the year of his death is about as ‘mature’ as one can get for the man.
This portrait strikes me as exceptionally handsome, which I well-imagine he was in reality, despite his ‘official portraiture’ which often suggests otherwise.
Too, I think some of his portraits, such as this one, suggest strongly a certain vanity in his masculine appearance – that he was well groomed and took considerable pride in his over-all appearance, quite despite his soldierly life-style.
Such vanity and the purposefulness of his official portraiture not withstanding, here I believe one beholds ‘Caracalla’ the man more as he was – an alpha male par excellence, and a devilishly handsome one.

This reverse celebrates Vespasian and Titus' Judaean Triumph at Rome.
Most examples of this reverse type are Antioch mint issues which copy the Rome mint type.
This example is unusual because of the obverse legend IMP CAES VESP AVG PM. RIC and RSC only record this reverse with COS IIII added to the end of the legend. BMCRE does not have either one listed but has a note for the COS IIII type.
This example is a rare official variant which Ian Carradice knows of only three other specimens.

These issues show pulvinaria (pl.) prepared for the solemn lectisternium followed the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79 which destroyed Pompeji and Herculaneum.
PULVINAR, seat, on which goods were offered to the gods at a lectisternium, a banquet.
LECTISTERNIUM, a 'laying out of couches', the name for a sacrifice conducted by the Romans at times of great public distress. Couches were set out and tables placed before them, and then images of the gods were laid upon the couches and a banquet set before them.

Charles Jean Francois Cheron (1635-1698), one of the most distinguished artists of the school of Jean Warin, was born at Nancy and was trained by his father, Jean-Charles Cheron, engraver to Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Cheron went to Rome and became engraver of medals for Clement IX and Innocent X. Cheron's style in his Roman medals is of remarkable boldness, and his medals of Pope Clement IX and of Bernini are grandiloquent and among the finest Italian medals of the period. He returned to France in 1675 and was employed by Louis XIV at the Medal Mint at Paris for about twelve years, where he contributed several medals to the medallic series of the monarch, the Histoire Metallique. His medals are considered to be in an international baroque style.

Zeus Nikephoros790 viewsThe image of Zeus with Nike (Zeus Nikephoros) was introduced by Seleukos I Nikator at Seleukeia on Tigris mint around 300 BC.
The initial iemissions from this mint in the name of Seleukos maintained the Zeus Aetophoros (eagle) reverse image typical of the earlier "Alexanders". However, shortly after the mint was established, the Zeus Nikephoros (Nike) image was introduced, eventually replacing the Zeus Aetophoros image on Babylonian coinage. The Nikephoros reverse was a direct allusion to Seleukos victory over Antigonos at Ipsos in 301 BC. This victory was the penultimate victory required to cement the Seleukid dynasty in a near unassailable position during the forty year struggle that ultimately saw Seleukos emerge as the most successful of the Diadochi.

The Kuliab Hoard from which this coin derives was found in clandestine (1995/6) excavations on an ancient site in the vicinity of Kuliab, Tajikistan, 8-10 km from Qizil Mazar, in the valley of the Qizil Su, on the right bank of the Oxus. The inferred find site is located about 80 km northeast of the famed ancient site Ai Khanoum on the left bank of the Oxus, a key Greco-Bactrian foundation.
The hoard reputedly consisted of 800 coins of which 250 were described by Bopearachchi in his paper. The hoard, consisted dominantly of small denomination silver and contained coins from the time of Seleukos I down to the time of Eukratides I. Almost all the coins were of Bactrian origin. It appears to have been a savings hoard that was closed around 145 BC, probably co-incident with the invasion of nomadic peoples from the north.
The Kuliab Hoard represents one of the easternmost finds of Graeco-Bactrian coins, proof that Bactrian influence extended well into the western Himalayan Valleys of Tajikistan to the north northeast of Ai Khanoum.
Probably my finest tetradrachm - the male equivalent Mona Lisa of coinage!
