   Sylvanus.-- The name of an usurper, in the
reign of Constantius II., the son of a Gaulish
captain ; proclaimed emperor at Cologne A.D.
355 ; slain within thirty days after his assumption
of the purple.  The coins, which have been ascribed by Goltzius and others to Sylvanus, are
pronounced to be false.
