Ariadne

Ariadne, or Ariane, is the legendary daughter of King Minos of Crete and of Pasiphae, who was enamored of Theseus. When Theseus, that favorite hero of the Athenians, arrived in her father 's kingdom of Crete, with other youths to be delivered in sacrifice to the Minotaur, she told him how to vanquish that monster, and gave him a ball of thread, by the aid of which he was able to find his way out of the labyrinth.

The sequel of Ariadne 's story is that she was deserted in the most faithless and ungrateful manner by Theseus; and have given herself up to despair, when Bacchus came and consoled her on the isle of Naxos.
