Monogram

A design composed of one or more letters, typically the initials of a name, making a single character which is used as an identifying mark. Ancient rulers, magistrates, moneyers and even die engravers would sometimes include their monograms on coins.  A ligature, which is two or more letters connected by a stroke, is a type of monogram but monograms with letters more completely united are not a ligatures.
