Claudius was a capable, yet unlikely emperor. Before coming to power he was shunned as an idiot due to a limp and stutter. After Caligula's murder, the Praetorian Guard found him hiding in fear. |Aizanis|, |Commodus,| |March| |or| |April| |177| |-| |31| |December| |192| |A.D.,| |Aezani,| |Phrygia||AE| |18|
Aizanoi, Latinized as Aezani, was an Ancient Greek city in western Anatolia. Located in what is now Cavdarhisar, Kutahya Province, its ruins are situated astride the River Penkalas, some 1,000 meters above sea level. The city was an important political and economic center in Roman times. Surviving remains from the period include a well-preserved Temple of Zeus, unusual combined thereat-stadium complex, and macellum inscribed with the Price Edict of Diocletian. The city fell into decline in Late Antiquity. Later serving as a citadel, in 2012 the site was submitted for addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Caligula (Gaius), 16 March 37 - 24 January 41 A.D., Aezanis, Phrygia

|Aizanis|, |Caligula| |(Gaius),| |16| |March| |37| |-| |24| |January| |41| |A.D.,| |Aezanis,| |Phrygia||AE| |19|
Caius Caesar was nicknamed Caligula (little boots) by the legions because as a child his mother dressed him in military uniforms (including little boots). For a few brief months he ruled well. However, an unknown disease drove him mad and he sunk into debauchery and murder. The Praetorian Guard murdered him, ending the madness.

Aizanis (Aezani, Aizanoi) was an important political and economic center in Roman times. Surviving remains from the period include a well-preserved Temple of Zeus, an unusual combined theater-stadium complex, and a macellum inscribed with the Price Edict of Diocletian.
RP113885. Bronze AE 19, RPC I 3085 (13 spec.); vA Aizanoi p. 90, 39; BMC Phrygia p. 32, 66; SNG Cop 80; SNG Mun 20, F, pleasing black and green patina, obv. legend mostly very weak or off flan, off center, weight 5.786 g, maximum diameter 19.0 mm, die axis 0o, Aezani (Cavdarhisar, Turkey) mint, group II, c. 37 - 41 A.D.; obverse ΓAIOΣ KAIΣAP (Gaius Caesar), radiate head right; reverse EΠI POYΦOY KAI KΛACCIKOY (counterclockwise from upper left, KAI ligate, authority of [magistrates] Klassikos and Rufus), Zeus Aëtophoros standing slightly left, head left, chest bare, himation around hips and legs, eagle in extended right hand, vertical long scepter in left hand, ΛOΛΛIWN (Lollius) monogram lower inner left, AIZANITWN upward inner right; Lollius Klassikos and Lollius Rufus, magistrates; SOLD

Germanicus, Caesar, b. 24 May 15 B.C. - d. 10 Oct 19 A.D., Aezanis, Phrygia

|Aizanis|, |Germanicus,| |Caesar,| |b.| |24| |May| |15| |B.C.| |-| |d.| |10| |Oct| |19| |A.D.,| |Aezanis,| |Phrygia||AE| |17|
Struck under Caligula in honor of his deceased mother and father. Trillmich identifies this type in his Familienpropaganda der Kaiser Caligula und Claudius with a male head left behind Germanicus. RPC I says this is wrong; a star is clear on the SNGvA plate coin. A star is clear on the SNGvA coin, but on our coin it looks like a worn laureate head left behind Germanicus. On some less worn examples online a laureate head left seems very clear! The RPC I plate coin (plate 130), however, has a lump due to die damage behind Germanicus. Is Trillmich's head left just a Rorschach-like interpretation of die damage? Probably.
RP71911. Bronze AE 17, SNG Cop 74 (same obverse die), RPC I 3082 (same); Trillmich 19 (same); SNGvA 3345; Weber 6997; Mionnet IV, p. 208, 80; BMC Phrygia -, F, weight 3.153 g, maximum diameter 16.8 mm, die axis 0o, Aizanoi (Cavdarhisar, Turkey) mint, struck under Caligula, 37 - 41 A.D.; obverse ΓEPMANIKOC, laureate head right, star (or laureate head left?) behind; reverse AΓPIΠΠINA AIZANTΩN (or similar), draped bust of Agrippina I right; SOLD
