The Francis Jarman Collection of Mark Antony Legionary Denarii

The legionary denarii were struck by Antony for the use of his fleet and legions, most likely at his winter headquarters at Patrae just before the Actian campaign. They may have been struck with silver from Cleopatra's treasury. The legionary denarii provide an interesting record of the 23 legions, praetorian cohorts and the chort of speculatores of which Antony's army was composed. Some of them give the name as well as the number of the legion honored. They have a lower silver content than the standard of the time. As a result they were rarely hoarded, heavily circulated and are most often found in very worn condition. The Francis Jarman collection includes the very rare and scarce named legions and cohorts.

|Marc| |Antony|, |Mark| |Antony,| |Triumvir| |and| |Imperator,| |44| |-| |30| |B.C.,| |LEG| |XVII| |CLASSICAE||denarius|
LEG XVII CLASSICAE was probably raised by Antony and disbanded by Octavian. No legion with the name Classicae is known from the imperial period. The old Caesarean legions XVII, XVIII and XIX were destroyed with Scribonius Curio in Africa in 49 B.C., restored by Octavian (Augustus), and then destroyed again in Germany under Quinctilius Varus in 9 A.D.

|Marc| |Antony|, |Mark| |Antony,| |Triumvir| |and| |Imperator,| |44| |-| |30| |B.C.,| |LEG| |VIIII||denarius|
Antony's LEG VIIII was probably the old Caesarean Ninth Legion. It was sometimes known as the IX Macedonica or IX Triumphalis. The IX served in Spain until about 19 B.C., when it acquired the name IX Hispana. It was destroyed in Britain in Hadrian's time (see Rosemary Sutcliff's novel, The Eagle of the Ninth).

LEG XVIII LYBICAE was probably raised by Antony and disbanded by Octavian. No legion with the name Lybicae is known from the imperial period. The old Caesarean legions XVII, XVIII and XIX were destroyed with Scribonius Curio in Africa in 49 B.C., restored by Octavian (Augustus), and then destroyed again in Germany under Quinctilius Varus in 9 A.D.

Mark Antony, Triumvir and Imperator, 44 - 30 B.C., LEG X

|Marc| |Antony|, |Mark| |Antony,| |Triumvir| |and| |Imperator,| |44| |-| |30| |B.C.,| |LEG| |X||denarius|
Antony's legion X may have been disbanded by Augustus. The famous X Fretensis ('from the Channel') fought for Octavian, and the early history of X Gemina is obscure.
