イソップの名は誰もが知っており、「寓話におけるホメロス」とも称せられている。紀元前６世紀頃のトラキア出身の奴隷で、後に解放されたとされるが、彼の生涯の詳しいことは不明である。
本書はパエドルスとバブリオスがイソップの寓話と自分の創作を詩の形で刊行したものである。パエドルスはアウグストゥスの奴隷だったが解放され、アウグストゥスやティベリウスの家で家庭教師をしていたらしい。バブリオスがいつの人なのかは難しい問題のようだが、１世紀末には彼の寓話詩集が完成していたらしい。
いずれも単に教訓を与えようとするのではなく、読者を楽しませようとする作品である。もちろん現代の読者が読んでも楽しい作品になっている。「きつねと葡萄」などのおなじみの寓話も多数収録されている。
パエドルスの寓話の中にはティベリウスの親衛隊長であったセイヤヌスを批判したらしいものもあるそうで、興味深い。
